Modern Genocide
The Holocaust: It is not widely known that the Holocaust of World War II would not have occurred without psychiatric design and management. German psychiatrists devised the scientific justification for euthanasia based on racial inferiority long before World War II. In 1920, psychiatrist Alfred Hoches book, Permission to Destroy Life Unworthy of Life, demanded euthanasia be conducted on mental defectives. Their death will not be missed in the least except maybe in the hearts of their mother or guardian.... Hoche said. Psychiatrist Eugen Fischer, one of the authors of The Principles of Human Heredity and Racial Hygiene in 1921 also urged the annihilation of Negro children, theorizing that blacks were devoid of value and useless for employment other than for manual crafts.
The first gassing test was conducted at Brandenburg psychiatric institution in 1940 where 18 patients were exterminated while psychiatrists and staff watched. Following the experiments success, the euthanasia program began. Some 300,000 mental defective persons met their deaths at the hands of psychiatrists, before the program was introduced into the concentration camps. Over six million people were exterminated. Only a few Nazi psychiatrists were prosecuted during the Nuremberg Trials; most escaped justice, others returned to psychiatric practice after the war.
Apartheid: Like the Holocaust, South Africas apartheid system evolved from the racial inferiority theories of German psychiatrists. South Africas Prime Minister, Hendrick Verwoerd, a psychologist, studied in German universities when they were forwarding race betterment theories.
Subsequently, psychiatrists and psychologists offered the government a scientific means by which to deny black South Africans employment and education and to tear apart their families.
In 1928, an Inquiry instigated by Verwoerd blamed white poverty on black competition in South Africas labor market, stating that ...[L]ong-continued contact with inferior colored races has in some respects had deleterious social effects on the European. Proper education was denied blacks, with Verwoerd explaining that, if provided, it would create frustrated people trained for professions not open to them.
Experimenting On Minorities: Psychiatric treatment of minorities has included some of the most barbaric experiments ever carried out in the name of scientific research.
In the 1950s in New Orleans, black prisoners were used for psychosurgery experiments that involved implanting electrodes into the brain. The experiments were conducted by Dr. Robert Heath from Tulane University and an Australian, Dr. Harry Bailey. Bailey boasted that they had used blacks as it was cheaper to use Niggers than cats because they were everywhere and cheap experimental animals.10
In the 1970s, the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) funded one of the most covert and destructive programs of oppression of African Americans and Hispanics. Known as the Violence Initiative, psychiatrists proposed using psychosurgery and castration to control violence and thereby supposedly solve the riots in black and Latino ghettos.
In 1992, psychiatrist Dr. Frederick Goodwin, a director of the institute overseeing NIMH, compared African American youth living in inner cities to hyperaggressive and hypersexual monkeys in a jungle. The NIMH attempted to launch another Violence Initiative to see if African-Americans and Hispanics had a violent gene that could be controlled by psychiatric drugs. Children as young as five were to be the target.
