CCHR brought its Psychiatry: An Industry of Death traveling exhibit to Johannesburg under the theme “Human Rights and Mental Wellness Exhibition,” exposing psychiatry’s destructive impact on black and colored communities and drawing residents, municipal officials, nurses, teachers, police and youth.

Attendees discovered how psychiatry had exploited racism for decades—black South Africans were funneled into psychiatric institutions through secret government contracts guaranteeing high occupancy. Tens of thousands were committed without consent, drugged, subjected to electroshock without anesthesia and forced into unpaid labor. Psychiatrists applied eugenics theories that restricted education and opportunities for black South Africans. In 1983, after CCHR reported these abuses, a World Health Organization report compared the psychiatric labor camps to slavery and confirmed widespread neglect, abuse and preventable deaths.

After learning these shocking facts, one attendee said, “I used to think that psychiatry is there to help us, but after the exhibit, I got a lot of good information. We need to teach others about psychiatry so that they know.”

Another shared, “This exhibit is going to change many lives.”

Community members left the exhibit determined to protect themselves and their families from psychiatric abuse.

WE REALLY WANT TO hear FROM YOU

Authors, journalists, attorneys and even psychiatrists themselves denounce the deadly effects of psychiatric drugs.

AUTHOR

“Pharmaceutical companies are creating an epidemic. They know these drugs are causing suicidal thoughts and murder, yet they have no remorse. This is happening every day in your backyard. It could happen to your friend, your family, your neighbor.”

JOURNALIST AND BLOGGER

“I think any time there is a mass shooting, or just a single murder, the police need to look into what drug that person was taking.”

PSYCHIATRIST

“The money put into the mental health system and the number of medications being used are all increasing, not decreasing. Which leads me to believe that they’re actually not fixing or curing anything.”

PSYCHIATRIST

“What’s worse than the risk of suicidality? The person doesn’t live anymore. I mean, it doesn’t get more serious than that.”

LEAD TRIAL ATTORNEY

“The violence that we see in these mass shootings, without question, is driven by these drugs and the effect they have on people.”

TRIAL ATTORNEY

“The side effects that I have taken them to court over are suicide, murder, psychosis, people hearing voices, people seeing things that aren’t there, people going absolutely nuts and killing other people and/or themselves. That’s pretty serious.”

MENTAL HEALTH DEFENSE ATTORNEY

“It’s not that it’s happening because somebody didn’t get mental health treatment. It’s because they did get it.”

PSYCHIATRIST

“It is very apparent that we are not fixing anything with the medications. We may be covering things up. And at what price? Medications have other effects besides being addictive. Others that are pretty serious.”
